Monastery of Agios Georgios Ilion

On the southwest side of Mount Telethrion, 7 km from Ilia, lies the historic Monastery of Agios Georgios at an altitude of 400 meters, built in a breathtaking location. The panoramic view from the road makes Ilia appear like a painting.

This 15th-century monastery has been beautifully renovated and features an impressive carved wooden iconostasis, numerous relics preserved from barbarian invasions, and holy relics. According to tradition, the catacomb of Saint John the Baptist beneath the monastery predated it and was discovered following a vision experienced by a shepherd, along with a miraculous icon.

The catacomb is also known as “Discovery,” where a miraculous icon of Saint George was found, and “Horse’s Hoofprint,” as it is believed that Saint George the Rider appears or the sound of his horse’s hooves can be heard. It is said that years ago a hoofprint was even visible.

Monastery of Saint Irene Chrysovalantou

Following the road toward Rovies, 5 km from Ilia, visitors encounter a newer monastery dedicated to Saint Irene Chrysovalantou, the first monastery of Saint Irene following the New (Julian) calendar.

Built on a lush green slope above the children’s camps of the Metropolis of Chalkida, the monastery offers stunning views with a beautiful balcony over the Evoikos Gulf. It is a dependency of the Monastery of Agios Georgios Ilion and features two interior chapels adorned with Byzantine iconography. In the monastery’s olive grove stands the old church of Archangel Michael (renovated).

In addition to the main church of Saint Irene, there are two more chapels dedicated to Saint Onoufrios the Ascetic (celebrated on June 12) and Saint Job the Much-Suffering (celebrated on May 6), both decorated with magnificent Byzantine frescoes.

Dafnokouki Waterfall

A hidden treasure in Ilia, Evia. Dafnokouki Waterfall, surrounded by lush trees, rocks, and birdsong, is a paradise-like landscape where crystal-clear waters cascade into a small pool. A true treasure in the middle of nowhere. If you love action and hiking, organize your visit and enjoy exploring.
